GTA 5 vs GTA 6 map comparison: Size, Graphics and Everything We Actually Know
GTA 6 Map vs GTA 5: Size, Graphics and Everything We Actually Know

GTA 6 isn't out until November 19, 2026, but the map argument is already loud. Rockstar itself has called Leonida "about twice" the size of GTA 5's Los Santos — and fans with rulers, trailers, and way too much free time think that might actually be an undersell.
If you've searched "GTA 6 map vs GTA 5" and landed on ten different numbers, that's not because anyone is lying to you. It's because Rockstar has never published an official square-mile figure for any GTA game, this one included. Below, we've split out what's actually confirmed from what's still just a very educated guess — for the map, the graphics, and everything in between.
- Rockstar has never released an official size for the GTA 6 map, but a developer preview event described Leonida as roughly twice the size of GTA 5.
- Fan mapping groups measuring trailer footage estimate Leonida at 118–132 square miles, versus GTA 5's commonly cited 49 square miles (with water).
- GTA 6 is a whole state with six confirmed regions — Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Mount Kalaga, Port Gellhorn, and Ambrosia — not just one city.
- Graphics take a real generational leap: a rebuilt RAGE engine, real-time lighting, dynamic water, and much more detailed characters than GTA 5's 2013 tech.
- GTA 6 releases Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC release date has been announced.
Why Everyone's Comparing These Maps
GTA 5 came out in September 2013. That's over a decade of players memorizing every inch of Los Santos and Blaine County — the freeways, the military base, the one bridge everyone jumps off for a shortcut. So when Rockstar finally showed off GTA 6 and started dropping hints about a new state called Leonida, the first question everyone asked wasn't "how does it play?" It was "how big is it, really?" You can read more about the reveal itself in our GTA 6 release date and trailer roundup.
That question turned out to be harder to answer than it sounds. Rockstar doesn't publish square-mile numbers for its games — not for GTA 5, not for Red Dead Redemption 2, and so far not for GTA 6 either. Every figure floating around online, including some of the ones in this article, comes from fans measuring trailer footage frame by frame, or from journalists relaying comments made at preview events. We'll flag which is which as we go.
How Big Is the GTA 5 Map?
GTA 5's world is the state of San Andreas, built around the city of Los Santos with Blaine County's desert and mountains stretching out around it. The number you'll see quoted most often is about 49 square miles, and that figure includes a good chunk of ocean. Strip the water out and you're left with something closer to 29 square miles of actual land you can walk, drive, or fly over.
It's worth remembering that even this "confirmed" number isn't really official — it comes from fan community measurements that have been repeated so often over the past decade that most outlets treat it as settled fact. Rockstar itself has never printed a square-mileage figure for GTA 5.
How Big Is the GTA 6 Map? (Leonida Explained)
GTA 6 trades a single city-and-county setup for an entire fictional state: Leonida, Rockstar's satirical take on Florida. Vice City — its version of Miami — sits at the center, but the story and world stretch well beyond city limits into swampland, small towns, and coastline.
Rockstar's own trailers and website have confirmed six named regions so far:
- Vice City — the urban core, with beaches, nightlife, and Art Deco streets inspired by modern Miami.
- Leonida Keys — a chain of coastal islands, and the starting home of one of the two lead characters.
- Grassrivers — wide swampland and mangroves, Rockstar's take on the Everglades.
- Mount Kalaga — a national park area with forests and hiking trails, standing in for north Florida's uplands.
- Port Gellhorn — an industrial port town along the panhandle-style coast.
- Ambrosia — a rural farming town, with fewer details revealed so far.

As for the total size, Rockstar hasn't put a number on it. What we do have is a comment from a Rockstar North preview event, relayed by outlets who attended, describing the full map as roughly twice the size of GTA 5's, with Vice City alone said to be about twice the size of Los Santos on its own.
Why the Estimates Don't Agree
Part of the disagreement comes down to methodology. Some estimates count land only; others count land plus water, coastline, and ocean you can technically drive or boat through. Some are based on a Rockstar staffer's verbal description at a hands-off preview; others come from fans painstakingly tracing coastlines from trailer footage. None of these methods are wrong exactly — they're just answering slightly different questions, which is why "how big is GTA 6 vs GTA 5" doesn't have one clean answer yet.
What a Bigger Map Actually Means for Players
A bigger map isn't just a bragging-rights number. Rockstar has talked about wanting more variety this time — swamps, farmland, small towns, and a genuine feeling of leaving the city rather than just driving through slightly emptier suburbs. Whether that translates into more things to actually do, versus more empty road, is something we won't know for sure until the game is out.

GTA 5 vs GTA 6 Graphics: What's Actually Changed
Put simply: GTA 6 looks like a game made 13 years later, because it is. GTA 5 launched in 2013 on the PS3 and Xbox 360 before later getting console upgrades, and its engine shows its age up close — flat lighting that's baked in ahead of time, pedestrians that repeat within a few blocks, and an ocean that's really just an animated blue texture.
GTA 6's trailers point to a heavily rebuilt version of Rockstar's RAGE engine. Day-to-night transitions show shadows shifting and light bouncing off wet streets in real time, rather than a lighting pass that just swaps on a timer. Water reacts to weather and boats instead of sitting there as a static texture. Character close-ups show individual pores, believable hair movement, and skin that reacts to light more like real skin than the plastic-ish look GTA 5's Michael, Franklin, and Trevor had at launch.
Crowds are the other clear jump. GTA 5's streets recycle a fairly small pool of pedestrian models, and traffic thins out fast a block or two from the action. GTA 6's trailer crowd scenes show noticeably more variety in body types, clothing, and animation, with denser beach and street scenes in Vice City than anything GTA 5 ever rendered.
What Fans Are Saying
Reaction across Reddit and YouTube has mostly split into two camps. One side is happy to take Rockstar's "twice the size" comment at face value and is already planning road trips through Leonida. The other side points to the leaked measurements suggesting a smaller 1.7x jump and argues that marketing language like "twice as big" always gets rounded up. Both camps agree on one thing: the graphics leap between the two trailers and GTA 5 isn't up for debate the way the map size is — that comparison reads as settled almost everywhere online.
What's Next Before Launch
GTA 6 is scheduled to release on Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Digital pre-loading is expected to open on November 12. No PC release date has been announced, and Take-Two has reaffirmed the November date on every earnings call since it was set. Rockstar has also been dropping smaller updates roughly every week since its August "Extended Look," so more concrete details on performance modes, the exact map boundary, and possibly a full map reveal could land before launch.
