Ghost of Yotei: Release Date, PS5 Sales, New Game Plus, Map & PC Status Explained

Ghost of Yotei has been out for almost a year now, and it's still one of the most talked-about PS5 games around. People want to know if it's actually worth the hype, whether Sony's PC plans ever went anywhere, and what's coming next for Atsu's story. Let's go through all of it, one question at a time.
If you're new here, Ghost of Yotei is Sucker Punch's follow-up to the beloved Ghost of Tsushima. It isn't a direct sequel with the same hero — it's a standalone story set centuries later, in a colder, quieter corner of old Japan. And based on how well it's sold, a lot of players have already fallen for it.
- Ghost of Yotei launched on October 2, 2025, exclusively on PS5
- It sold over 3.3 million copies in its first month — a clear hit, not a flop
- New Game Plus, with a brutal new "Lethal" difficulty, arrived free on November 24, 2025
- Reports say Sony canceled a nearly finished PC port in March 2026, though nothing is officially confirmed
- A one-year anniversary Complete Edition, with a new story expansion, lands October 1, 2026
What Is Ghost of Yotei, Exactly?
Ghost of Yotei is an open-world action game made by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony. It's set in 1603, about 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. You don't play as Jin Sakai this time. Instead, you take control of Atsu, a lone traveler hunting down six killers known as the Yotei Six, who wiped out her family years earlier.
The setting is Ezo — the old name for what we now call Hokkaido, in northern Japan. It's colder, wilder, and a little more isolated than Tsushima Island, and that mood runs through the whole game. If you liked the first game's mix of sword fights, stealth, and quiet exploration, Yotei builds on that same formula rather than reinventing it from scratch.
It's part of a bigger wave of big, story-heavy open-world games taking over 2025 and 2026 — the kind of releases we cover a lot on this site, including our roundup of the best games worth playing right now.
Ghost of Yotei Release Date: When Did It Come Out on PS5?
Here's the simple answer: Ghost of Yotei released on October 2, 2025, and it launched only on PlayStation 5. There was no PS4 version — Sucker Punch built the game around what PS5 and PS5 Pro can do, from fast loading to the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
At launch, you could pick from three versions: the $69.99 Standard Edition, the $79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition (extra armor, a sword kit, and a soundtrack sampler), and a Collector's Edition with a steelbook case and a katana replica. Preloading opened a few days early, on September 27, 2025, so PS5 owners were ready to jump in right at midnight local time.
"A story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance."
Brian Fleming, Co-Founder & Studio Head — Sucker Punch ProductionsSo if you've been waiting to jump into Ezo, PS5 is still the only way in right now. We'll get to whether that changes in the PC section below.
Is Ghost of Yotei a Hit or a Flop?
Short answer: it's a hit, and a pretty big one. Let's look at the actual numbers instead of just going by internet chatter.
The Sales Numbers So Far
Ghost of Yotei sold around 1.3 million copies on its very first day, then passed 2 million copies within three days. By the one-month mark, Sony confirmed the game had crossed 3.3 million copies sold worldwide. For comparison, Ghost of Tsushima needed close to four months to hit 5 million copies — so Yotei was actually outselling its own predecessor early on.
Sony didn't stop there. On a later earnings call, the company said Yotei had "exceeded the sales" of Tsushima over the same stretch of time and called it a major hit for the PlayStation lineup. By mid-2026, industry trackers estimated the game was closing in on 5 million copies sold and was actually the best-selling first-party PlayStation Studios title of the year so far — ahead of even MLB The Show 26.
What Critics Said
Reviewers liked it too, even if it wasn't a perfect score across the board. On OpenCritic, Ghost of Yotei sits around an 87 average from critics, with 94% of reviewers recommending it. IGN gave it an 8 out of 10, praising the fluid combat and gorgeous landscapes, even if the story beats felt a little predictable. Not every outlet was as glowing — Eurogamer landed closer to the middle at 3 out of 5 — but the overall picture is a game that mostly delivered on what fans wanted.
New Game Plus in Ghost of Yotei: What's New?
If you finished the main story and want a reason to go back, New Game Plus gives you one. It arrived as a free update on November 24, 2025, a little under two months after launch. Here's what it actually gives you:
- You keep every weapon, piece of armor, and skill you unlocked in your first playthrough
- A brutal new Lethal difficulty was added, on top of tougher "Plus" versions of the existing difficulty modes
- A new currency called Ghost Flowers lets you buy 30+ new cosmetics, including fresh armor sets and dyes
- 10 new charms, plus an extra upgrade tier for your existing gear
- Post-game replay options for things like duels against Takezo's Disciples, complete with stat tracking
- New accessibility settings and extra Photo Mode tools, like a composition grid and shutter speed control
In short, New Game Plus isn't just a harder version of the same game — it's Sucker Punch's way of giving long-time players fresh goals, whether that's chasing a Lethal-difficulty run or just collecting every new cosmetic.
The Ghost of Yotei Map: How Big Is Ezo?
Ghost of Yotei is set on the island of Ezo, the old name for present-day Hokkaido. In the game, Ezo is split into six regions:
- Yotei Grasslands
- Tokachi Range
- Nayoro Wilds
- Teshio Ridge
- Ishikari Plain
- Oshima Coast
Yotei Grasslands and Tokachi Range sit right next to each other and form one big connected hub in the middle of the map. The other four regions branch off from there, separated by short transitions rather than loading screens you'd actually notice.
On paper, the map is only a little bigger than Ghost of Tsushima's. But it doesn't really feel that way when you're playing. Sucker Punch leaned hard into distant mountain views, wide grassland vistas, and Mount Yotei looming in the background almost everywhere you go — all of it makes Ezo feel a lot bigger than the actual numbers suggest.

Will Ghost of Yotei Come to PC?
This is probably the question we get asked the most, so let's be straight about it: as of right now, Ghost of Yotei is still not available on PC, and there's no official release date for one either.
It's not that a PC version was never planned. Reports through late 2025 and early 2026 pointed to Nixxes Software — Sony's go-to studio for PC ports — working on a version aimed at a 2026 release. Then, in March 2026, things changed. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier reported that Sony had decided to pull back from putting its single-player exclusives on PC, and that Ghost of Yotei's port (along with Housemarque's Saros) was caught up in that shift.
Several industry insiders backed this up, saying the PC version was reportedly "extremely far along" before it got shelved. The idea, based on this reporting, is that Sony wants its biggest single-player games to stay exclusive to PS5 to help sell consoles, while live-service and multiplayer titles still make their way to PC.
So for now, if you want to play Ghost of Yotei, a PS5 is genuinely your only option. Curious how PC games are shaping up on the hardware side these days? Our GTA 6 system requirements guide is a good look at what a big open-world release expects from your rig.
Community Reaction
General reaction from players has stayed pretty positive since launch. On Reddit and other gaming forums, people mostly praise the combat, the visuals, and Atsu as a lead character, while some feel the story structure — chasing six bosses in almost any order — starts to feel repetitive by the halfway point, a complaint that echoes what a few critics said too.
The PC cancellation news did sting for part of the community, especially players who'd been hoping to try Legends, the free co-op mode, without buying a PS5. Even so, it hasn't slowed down sales or the game's momentum heading into its Complete Edition release.
What's Next: Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition
Right on cue for its first anniversary, Sucker Punch announced Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition on August 12, 2026. It's set to launch October 1, 2026, exclusively on PS5.
The full Complete Edition package costs $69.99 and bundles in the base game, the free Legends co-op mode, both new additions, plus everything that used to be Digital Deluxe-only content and the Charm of Hokkyokusei. If you already own Ghost of Yotei, you don't need to buy it all again — a $14.99 upgrade unlocks Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted on your existing save.
Pre-order before September 30, 2026, and you'll also get early access to the Sakai Armor on release day, a nice nod to Jin Sakai's family armor from the original Ghost of Tsushima. A free update landing the same day adds a relaxing new photo-mode feature called Beauty of Yotei, along with new trophies and cosmetics for everyone, whether you buy the expansion or not.
It's a strong roadmap for a PS5 exclusive that's already outperformed expectations — and honestly, a full year of steady support is a big part of why the game has held onto its "hit" status instead of fading out after launch week.
